Ubisoft, the well-known video game publisher responsible for creating popular franchises such as Assassin’s Creed and Just Dance, has just launched Rabbids NFT avatars for The Sandbox, an Ethereum metaverse game.

The Rabbids NFT avatars, which are being sold for 100 SAND (about $78), are the first playable characters available for purchase in the game.

This move marks Ubisoft’s continued exploration of the Web3 world and the potential of NFTs in gaming. In fact, this is not the company’s first venture into the world of Web3 as it previously released in-game NFT items for Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

The Rabbids NFT avatars are sold on the Ethereum scaling network Polygon and come as a part of a Lunar New Year themed sale. Buyers will be able to view various designs on Friday, and the avatars are said to be a “key to future utility” in The Sandbox, providing access to potential future drops.

Ubisoft’s Rabbids characters were first announced for The Sandbox a year ago, and they were subsequently added to the game’s NFT Institute experience. The Sandbox will also be launching a Rabbids game world on February 28 as part of its current open alpha test.

As one of the first major video game publishers to explore Web3 and NFTs, Ubisoft has been at the forefront of this exciting new space.

In 2020, the company even released a Rabbids-themed NFT experiment to benefit the charity UNICEF and collaborated with Web3 fantasy sports startup Sorare on One Shot League, which utilized Ethereum NFT soccer player cards.
