The devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6th has had a devastating impact, with over 33,000 confirmed deaths so far.
But amidst the tragedy, there has been a heartening outpouring of support from the cryptocurrency community. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has now made at least two substantial contributions to help the victims.
According to blockchain security firm PeckShield, Buterin recently donated 50 ETH, worth approximately $77,000, to Anka Relief, a Web3 relief support organization.
The donation follows another 99 ETH that Buterin sent to Ahbap, a non-profit organization dedicated to relief efforts in Turkey. To date, Ahbap claims to have received over $4.3 million in crypto donations, with stablecoins being the most popular tokens sent.
The crypto community has rallied in support of the earthquake victims, with companies and individuals sending millions of dollars’ worth of cryptocurrency to aid relief efforts. Binance, for example, has donated $5 million and even announced $100 BNB airdrops to those in the hardest-hit areas.
The outpouring of support from the cryptocurrency community shows how digital assets can be used for good. Vitalik Buterin’s contributions, along with the support of others, are helping to bring hope and relief to those affected by the tragedy.
As the crypto community continues to grow, it’s heartening to see how individuals and companies are coming together to make a difference.
