What is an altcoin?
An altcoin is any cryptocurrency that is not Bitcoin. The term “altcoin” is short for “alternative coin,” and is commonly used to refer to any cryptocurrency that is not the first or most well-known one, which is currently Bitcoin.
Altcoins are often developed as alternatives to Bitcoin, with the aim of addressing perceived limitations or improving upon the original design in some way.
Examples of altcoins include Ethereum, Litecoin, and Ripple. These coins have their own independent networks and are traded on cryptocurrency exchanges, just like Bitcoin.
