Cumulus Data, a subsidiary of Talen Energy, has finished building the first nuclear-powered data center in the US for hosting Bitcoin mining.
The 48 MW, 300,000 sq ft data center is connected to the Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania and will offer Bitcoin mining and cloud computing services.
The data center will start commercial operations this year. The company also plans to develop two more data centers in phase 1 of the project, with a planned capacity of 475 MW.
Using nuclear power for Bitcoin mining is considered an eco-friendly option, and the company aims to provide low-cost, reliable, and zero-carbon electricity to data center customers.
